JAMES BUDREAU, a partner at Bassil, Klovee & Budreau, manages the criminal group of the firm along with Janice Bassil. Mr. Budreau has practiced complex federal and state criminal law for over twenty five years in Massachusetts and throughout the Northeast including Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
James Budreau‘s focus is criminal trials and post conviction relief in state and federal court. Just last year Jim won an acquittal in a first degree murder case after a three week trial in Boston. Just months before that acquittal, Jim had deadlocked two separate juries for the same client in another homicide case. He also won acquittals for another client in two separate first degree murder cases.
While state homicide cases often go to trial, Attorney Budreau’s expertise also encompasses cases ranging from complex federal litigation to drunk driving cases in the district court. In federal court, where most cases plead out, he has successfully represented clients at trial and on appeal. In one federal case, Jim won an acquittal for a businessman accused of laundering illicit profits through his business while reversing the conviction of another convicted of drug distribution in another. In state court he has won acquittals and resolved cases ranging from oui’s, narcotic offenses and bank robbery to sex offenses and white collar prosecutions.
Attorney Budreau, like his partner, Janice Bassil, regularly represents juveniles and adults accused of serious criminal offenses and relishes defending the tough case and taking on the government. Attorney Budreau also represents clients in employment related matters, tort cases as well as college students accused of misconduct. Jim taught employment law at Harvard University Law School and ran the Hale and Dorr employment law clinic. He has litigated complex employment and tort cases involving banks, police departments, iconic nonprofits, government agencies and large corporate entities while often resolving cases for six figure settlements and substantive work place changes.
